“The Daily” grind….

Sometimes you don’t have to venture very far to discover a new places to enjoy delicious coffee. “The Daily” is a hidden gem on our doorstep, in the new Sun Valley mall in Fish Hoek. We had visited a few years back when it was new, and over-priced. However it seems like it has undergone a makeover and is now a good value coffee shop, with delicious coffee. Using Terbodore beans, and generous sized mugs, the coffee is smooth, rich and full of flavour.
They have a well-priced menu, serving generous portions to suit any appetite, in a relaxed friendly environment, definitely well worth a visit!

Birthday Beans

Birthdays come once a year, and after an early start, breakfast accompanied of course with some delicious coffee was required to kick start the day off!

Unfortunately the first stop fell sadly short of what was required and expected, from an expensive and smart coffee shop..so after finishing our ‘minuto’ coffees, embarked on an epic shopping spree which required a top-up of hot, black, rich coffee to finish the day off. Heading for Woolworths, which was one of the closest options was the best decision! To be greeted by a delicious aroma of fair-trade coffee being masterfully dispensed into awaiting cups to be enjoyed and savoured..mmm.

With a choice of 3 sizes, each being reasonably priced, makes them an excellent alternative to the mainstream coffee vendors. I opted for a Grande Americano in order to make up for the lack of decent breakfast caffeine. The mugs were appropriately large, and the coffee inside was rich, smooth and strong. Some establishments can tend to water down their large size with too much water when making large coffees, however this did not apply in this case. Perfect way to warm up on these cold Cape winters days, and in relaxed environment too.

When you are next out shopping, make sure you stop by and grab a coffee from Woolworths, you wont be disappointed. Team it with some carrot cake for added enjoyment.

Interprovincial Interlude

Its always nice to travel, and one of the nicest things is discovering great places along the way, especially ones which serve delicious coffee! Whilst travelling through the Eastern Cape, we stopped in the small town of Graaff Reinet, and were lucky enough to stumble upon a place called “Our Yard” Roastery & Culture Shop, and Tea Cafe. Naturally we had to sample the coffee, and enjoy a delicious breakfast too.

The Roastery serves its delicious java blend to both its own coffeeshop, which serves coffee and cakes, and the Tea Cafe, which is where the more substantial breakfast menu is on offer.  This was a lovely setting, with a roaring fire (which was quite welcome considering the chilly temperatures) the coffee was strong and full of flavour, and served in a decent sized cup too! The perfect compliment to their tasty and filling cooked breakfast, which has its own distinctly local flavour! For those of you who prefer tea to coffee, they do an incredible range of ‘gourmet’ teas, to suit any taste, most of which are available to buy to take home and enjoy too.

I thoroughly recommend this whether you are passing through or staying a while in Graaff Reinet, add this to your list of places to visit and enjoy.

High Tea, Nice Coffee…

Looking for somewhere different to enjoy coffee may not sound like a hard task, but some areas do lack somewhat in that department. However when you do find these hidden gems they usually end up being incredible finds!!  Nestled in a small courtyard on the border between Wynberg and Plumstead, we found a quaint little gem called High Tea. It is a small coffee shop but bursts with character and charm, and has a beautiful courtyard to sit in, and enjoy when the weather is good.

Providing freshly baked decadent cakes, and great value food, it is the perfect place to ‘get away’ from the hustle and bustle, and unwind. With friendly attentive staff who add to the whole experience. Their coffee is organic and carefully sourced, it is made with care and passion, comes in big mugs (always a bonus) and was truly delicious! Definitely a place to visit again.

Livin la ‘Vida e Cafe’ Loca

Although I have sampled Vida e Cafe’s delicious coffee on more than one occasion, I havent yet managed to review it, partly because it is so flavourful, I havent managed to get a pic to use! So now I have finally managed to enjoy their delicious Americano, and snap it.

The lively vibe, and friendly staff, add to the upbeat atmosphere. They put a large emphasis on training their baristas’ to a very high standard, the passion for the bean comes through in smooth, robust and tasty coffee!

Now for something a little different…

Whilst this site is devoted to discovering great places to find great coffee, and letting everyone know about it! Once in a while you come across something which also deserves to be shared, especially when it is also found at a coffee shop. After having had my caffeine fix for the day, and ending up at Mugg & Bean, I had to explore other options, and chose their Earl Grey tea.

Now usually in other eateries and coffee shops,  when ordering tea, one can expect a lipton teabag or something similar, however Mugg & Bean supply their own great tasting varieties of tea in a box containing two teabags for full flavour (or just use one and take one home) enabling you to make the most of your tea break.

Will definitely give their delicious Tea a,

The American Dream

During a busy and unplanned shopping trip, there is a need to refuel and recharge, which is where a small slice of New York (minus the people in suits, and frenzied traffic) definitely fits the bill! With one wall devoted to a view of Brooklyn bridge, classy decor, a food menu full of American themed dishes and great tasting coffee, Tribakery seems to score on every level.

As is the case with all things American, the coffee comes in large cups, and is well priced to, perfect accompaniment to a well earned break from the shops. Investing time in training an in-house barista definitely pays of, and is displayed in the smooth tasting coffee which is the end result.

Sun, Sea, Sand & Coffee (Well sort of)

Fish Hoek Galley, has one of the best locations any restaurant could ever ask for, along with a steady supply of clientele. Whether enjoying a day swimming, meeting friends or enjoying an evening meal, this venue has it all, except perhaps a large size decent coffee. Which is strange when one of the things we see most people doing is enjoying good company, lively conversation and a drink.

With such a growing trend and upsurge in demand for a decent cup of good coffee at a decent price, one would have thought that they (Fish Hoek Galley) would have heard the call and answered it…sadly it seems not to be the case. Their coffee only comes in one size (no large option available, only a double shot), and it really doesn’t deliver in the flavour or quality department either.

Coffee, Cuban Style

The home of the hand-rolled cigars, also has another trick up its sleeve, great tasting coffee! Situated towards the top edge of the ‘coffee-belt’, Cuba may not readily spring to mind when one thinks of coffee, or choosing a coffee shop.

El Greeyo is located in Salt River, and is the brain-child of 4 Latin Americans, and is a real value for money establishment. The coffee, was rich and delicious, and plentiful. Great price for my Americano, and a mouth-watering slice of carrot cake, wow!! We shall definitely be returning to sample more of their 100% Authentic Cuban Cuisine.

To coin one of their pay-off lines, “Your Coffee Break is to short for a mediocre cup of coffee”

Fancy a Coffee, ‘My Brew’

Its always nice to discover new places, and be very nicely suprised along the way too. After a very disappointing first coffee of the day (which wont even get reviewed) a surprisingly delicious and very well priced coffee was found at Stellenbosch University!

If there is one thing a student needs, it is decent coffee in large quantities…and on a budget too, and it looks like this Uni, may have the answer. A new Brand called My Brew, has set up a kiosk in the main student cafeteria, and I went for their large Americano which was only R14! (Cappucino is R15).

Large cup + great price + delicious coffee = Happy Customers.

A very cute logo of Two Meerkats, and eyecatching branding, will definitely help attract customers.

It was a delicious cup of coffee, made by staff who took pride in what they were doing and understood what it takes to create smooth tasting coffee.

This is the first time I have tried their coffee, so I can’t comment on their consistency but their price coupled with great coffee is a winner.
